The last section of the Louvre is about the architecture of the museum. What really makes this place special is the surrounding space that harmonizes modern design with the classic design of the middle ages. Master architect I.M. Pei was the brain behind the pyramid schemes to run throughout the foundations of the Louvre of what once was a military fortress.
At first the French hated the pyramid designs, seeing it as too drastic of a change to a historical monument. And the fact that the designer was a Chinese American made is even worse. But as politics ran its course, and time silenced the noise, key icons like Pierre Boulez and Claude Pompidou, followed by many others started to back Pei’s design. By the late 80’s the structure transformed from a left over palace to a booming economic and cultural machine.
The museum design is centered by the main glass and steel pyramid, mirrored by the opposite inverted pyramid to direct the reflection of light into the underground floors. Using the geometry of transparent pyramids allowed compatibility with the interior design and linked the three major buildings into one. As we wrap up this view of the Louvre, make sure you find your way one day to Paris to experience one of the most unforgettable spots in the world for yourself.
